We examine why firms publicly disclose their innovations on GitHub and whether the disclosure influences their ability to acquire and retain talent. We find that firms are more likely to make this disclosure if they have a higher degree of technological proximity to other firms but are less likely to make the disclosure if they face higher technological pressure from their peers. We find that firms with GitHub projects experience a shorter time to fill their tech job postings and fill a higher percentage of job postings. Furthermore, these firms have higher tech employee satisfaction and retain patent inventors longer. These findings suggest that GitHub participation may bolster a firm’s reputation in the tech labor market, enabling firms to recruit better-fitted tech employees and bolster tech employee satisfaction and retention. Our study highlights the critical role of talent acquisition and retention in the movement behind open-source innovation. (Authors: Yi Cao, Anya Mkrtchyan, Jenny Tucker, and Chi Wan)
