Mourning for Professor Hans Stoll, Ph.D.

The Faculty of Economics and Business at Goethe University mourns the loss of Professor Hans Stoll, Ph.D., who passed away on March 21 at the age of 80. He had been awarded an honorary doctorate of our faculty in 2007, based on his outstanding contributions to the field of finance with many path-breaking publications in the areas of market microstructure and derivatives. Hans Stoll had received his Ph.D. from the University of Chicago and served as a faculty member at the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania and later at the Owen Graduate School at Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tennessee. His most famous scientific contribution is arguably an equation known as put-call parity, a relation between the prices of different types of options which has become one of the best-known formulas in all of finance and is nowadays common knowledge in both academia and industry. Hans Stoll had served as the president of the American Finance Association and the Western Finance Association, the two most important professional societies in academic finance, and he held many positions on advisory boards in the industry. Having been born in Germany, Hans Stoll had always kept close ties to Germany and to many German finance researchers, among them a number of colleagues here at our faculty. We will always honor his memory, and our sympathy goes out to his family.
