IMFS appoints Jens Weidmann as Distinguished Fellow

Dr. Jens Weidmann is being honored by the Institute for Monetary and Financial Stability (IMFS). The IMFS Board of Directors appointed Weidmann as a Distinguished Fellow. “We are very pleased to have Jens Weidmann, with his expertise and many years of central bank experience, as an IMFS Distinguished Fellow. During his time at the helm of the Bundesbank, monetary policy had to find answers to new challenges such as the debt crisis and the Corona crisis. Jens Weidmann shaped the debate with clear and thoughtful stability-oriented positions. He has worked with great energy and heart for viable solutions for a stable monetary union and the success of European integration,” said Prof. Volker Wieland, Managing Director of the IMFS.

Commenting on the IMFS decision, Jens Weidmann said, “I gladly accept this appointment, because I have always felt closely connected to the goals and issues of the IMFS and am pleased that I can now continue to accompany and support its work.”

Jens Weidmann was President of the Deutsche Bundesbank from 2011 to 2021. Since 2015, he has also held the post of Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Bank for International Settlements (BIS). Prior to that, he headed the Department for Economic and Fiscal Policy at the Federal Chancellor‘s Office from 2006 to 2011. During this time, Weidmann also worked closely with Chancellor Angela Merkel as personal representative charged with preparations for the world economic summits of the G8 and G20 countries.

As Distinguished Fellows, the IMFS honors personalities from academia, business or politics who have rendered outstanding services to the scientific work and policy advice of the IMFS or who wish to enter into active cooperation with the IMFS in the future.

Founded in 2007, the Institute for Monetary and Financial Stability (IMFS) is a center for economic and legal research with a focus on central banks supported by Goethe University and the Foundation for Monetary and Financial Stability (Stiftung Geld und Währung). Its interdisciplinary research focuses on the tasks, competencies and powers of central banks in monetary policy as well as regulation and financial supervision.

In addition to research work and the promotion of young academics, the IMFS is dedicated to the exchange of academic views - for example, through the annual conference “The ECB and Its Watchers.” Since 2012, the Executive Director of the IMFS has been Prof. Volker Wieland, holder of the Endowed Chair of Monetary Economics and member of the German Council of Economic Experts.
