Biographical Information

Undergraduate studies at the University of Cambridge, U.K. (BA, 1981; MA in Economics, 1986), graduate studies at Yale University (MA, 1982, M. Phil., 1984 and Ph.D., 1987). Haliassos has taught at the University of Maryland, USA (Assistant Professor, 1987-93), and at the University of Cyprus (1993-2004). He has visited the European University Institute in Florence as Part-time Professor in the Finance and Consumption Chair in summer 2000, spring 2001, and spring 2004 (on sabbatical from Cyprus). He was also Visiting Researcher at CSEF (Center of Studies in Economics and Finance) in Italy, in summer 1998.

His research interests are Macroeconomics, Financial, and Monetary Economics with emphasis on household portfolio choice under labor income risk, stockholding behavior, consumer debt, business equity, the distribution of wealth, the impact of credit market imperfections, and novel approaches to analysing preferences.

Haliassos is currently Program Director at the Center for Financial Studies (CFS Program on Household Wealth Management), and a Research Professor at the Mannheim Research Institute on the Economics of Aging (MEA). He is also member of the Scientific Committee and scientist in charge of network research on Saving and Portfolios in the European Union Research Training Network on the Economics of Aging in Europe, RTN AGE (2002-2006).

Haliassos has coordinated a number of international research projects. Together with L. Guiso and T. Jappelli, they have coordinated a major international research project on “Household Portfolios”, involving 30 researchers from nine countries, with results published by MIT Press in early 2002. Guiso, Haliassos, and Jappelli also coordinated a project on “Stockholding: A European comparison” with participants from five EU countries and results published in a 2002 volume by Palgrave Macmillan Publishers. Haliassos has coordinated a University of Cyprus-Central Bank of Cyprus project that constructed the first (1999) and the second (2002) Cyprus Surveys of Consumer Finances, now included in the Luxembourg Wealth Study international database, and is currently advisor to the group collecting the third data wave of CySCF. He has also served as a member of the External Advisory Group to the European Commission on Improving the Socioeconomic Knowledge Base (2000-2002).

Haliassos has organized the sixth research conference of the European Research Training Network on the Economics of Aging in Europe (Frankfurt, May 12-14, 2005). He has previously organized an international conference at the European University in Florence, four international Conferences in Cyprus, and an international seminar series in Macroeconomics and Finance between 1995 and 2004 at the University of Cyprus (first with Lenos Trigeorgis, and since 2000 also with C. Koulovatianos).
