Due to the high morbidity and mortality of lung diseases the focus of modern medicine is on the prevention, diagnostics and adequate treatment. Imaging using chest X‑rays is the gold standard for this. The automated evaluation of chest X‑ray images could represent an optimal foundation for the evaluation using artificial intelligence (AI); however, chest X‑ray classification is not a trivial task for a purely AI-based system. The implementation and training of these AI-based systems require high-performance computer systems. In addition, the user must have the appropriate expertise. This article describes how AI programs work, what importance AI systems currently have in medicine and the resulting limitations, challenges and possibilities.
