Jan Pieter Krahnen to advice the European Securities and Markets Authority

Jan Pieter Krahnen, Professor of Corporate Finance at the House of Finance, has been appointed a member of the Group of Economic Advisors of the Committee of Economic and Markets Analysis (CEMA) of the newly created European Securities and Markets Authority (ESMA). ESMA is part of the new European System of Financial Supervision, closely working together with the other European Supervisory Authorities competent in the field of banking (EBA), and insurance and occupational pensions (EIOPA). In comparison to its predecessor, CESR, which was a non-profit association, ESMA has a legal personality close to an EU Agency with considerably increased powers in the rule making process and supervision. These changes go hand in hand with an increase of resources devoted to economic analysis.

CEMA has the task to provide economic expertise to ESMA which means in practice mainly monitoring market developments and identifying risks and vulnerabilities on the one hand and providing impact assessments and cost-benefit analyses on the other hand. The Group of Economic Advisors has been set up to help CEMA with the identification of risks, but also to develop the relationship with academics and market participants with economic expertise.
