The Faculty of Economics and Business collaborates with numerous renowned institutes and research centers. Please find below a selection of the institutions cooperating with the faculty that have a connection to Goethe University Frankfurt.

The Center for Financial Studies conducts independent and internationally oriented research in important areas of finance. It serves as a forum for dialog between academia, policymakers and the financial sector. It also offers a platform for top-class basic and applied research of relevance for the financial sector in Europe.


The Center for Leadership and Behavior in Organizations (CLBO) is a practice-oriented research institute at Goethe University Frankfurt. It brings together researchers from economics, psychology and sociology, who conduct research, teach and advise on human resource management topics in an interdisciplinary approach. The CLBO offers participating researchers an inspiring environment characterized by diversity, cooperative exchange and productive energy.


efl – the Data Science Institute is an industry-academia partnership between Goethe University Frankfurt and the Technical University of Darmstadt on the one hand and the following corporate partners on the other: Deutsche Börse Group, DZ Bank Gruppe, Finanz Informatik, American Express, Deutsche Leasing, and FACTSET Digital Solutions. It is hosted by Goethe University Frankfurt.


FLEX – the Frankfurt Laboratory for Experimental Economic Research is a research institute at the Faculty of Economics and Business of Goethe University Frankfurt. It was founded in 2008 and is located on Westend Campus. Researchers at FLEX use experimental methods to study human behavior and decision making in social and economic contexts.


The Institute for Banking and Financial History (IBF) in Frankfurt am Main has supported financial history research for over 50 years and offers a platform for dialog between practice, politics and academia. With a wide spectrum of events and publications, the IBF stands for the promotion of financial history research and the communication of sound research contributions.


The International Center for Insurance Regulation (ICIR) is recognized as a leading scientific institution. Its aim is to foster independent research on insurance regulation and to deliver market solutions to regulatory questions. Further, it provides an international and interdisciplinary platform for academics, insurance executives, regulators and policymakers to exchange ideas and shape strategic thinking on the future development of insurance and insurance regulation.


In 2022, the Institute for Law and Finance (ILF) at Goethe University Frankfurt celebrated its 20th anniversary. The ILF was established in 2002 as a private foundation of the university, with the goal of providing high-quality and comprehensive education and training by legal and financial specialists and experts to those who seek to distinguish themselves in law and finance. The ILF has two well-established Master of Laws programs: “Master of Laws in Finance” and “Master of Laws in International Banking, Securities and Finance” (the latter is intended for graduates from Asia). Many top international students from throughout the world come to study at the ILF every year. Besides teaching, the ILF is also renowned for providing an academic forum for many debates and discussions on highly topical issues at its conferences, seminars and guest lectures. In addition, the ILF offers a wide spectrum of research publications.


Founded in 2007, the Institute for Monetary and Financial Stability (IMFS) is a center for economic and legal research with a focus on central banks. It is supported by Goethe University Frankfurt and the Stiftung Geld und Währung (Foundation for Monetary and Financial Stability). Its interdisciplinary research focuses on the tasks, competencies and powers of central banks in monetary policy as well as regulation and financial supervision. In addition to research work and the support of young academics, the IMFS is committed to the exchange of scientific opinions – for example, through the annual conference “The ECB and Its Watchers.” Professor Volker Wieland, Endowed Chair of Monetary Economics, has been the Executive Director of the IMFS since 2012.


The Leibniz Institute for Financial Research SAFE (“Sustainable Architecture for Finance in Europe”) is dedicated to interdisciplinary research on the financial markets and their stakeholders in Europe as well as to research-based, independent policy advice. The institute builds on collaboration between researchers from economics, law and political science and the diversity of scientific methods. SAFE was founded in 2013 as a partnership between Goethe University Frankfurt and the Center for Financial Studies (CFS). SAFE has operated as a legally independent institute and been a member of the Leibniz Association since January 2020.
